Target Information

Aldosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps regulate blood pressure by increasing potassium release and promoting the uptake of sodium and water by the kidneys. It is essential for sodium conservation in the kidney, salivary glands, sweat glands, and colon. Aldosterone plays a central role in regulating plasma sodium (Na⁺), extracellular potassium (K⁺), and arterial blood pressure, primarily through action on mineralocorticoid receptors in the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the nephron. It influences sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion, thereby affecting water balance, blood pressure, and blood volume. Dysregulation of aldosterone contributes to cardiovascular and renal diseases. It functions in opposition to atrial natriuretic hormone secreted by the heart.
