Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and produces multiple physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin (also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor, ADSF, and FIZZ3) is a cytokine specifically secreted by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin is suggested to play key paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
Studies indicate that serum resistin levels increase in obese, diabetic mice, antagonizing insulin action and contributing to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating chromatin for transcription.
PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
