Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin (also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor, ADSF, or FIZZ3) is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. It plays a paracrine role and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
In obese, diabetic mice, serum resistin levels are elevated, antagonizing insulin activity and contributing to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and is modulated by coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating chromatin for transcription.
PPAR gamma and RXR ligands downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
