Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated in animals. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) or FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin appears to play key paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
Studies have shown that:
- In obese, diabetic mice, serum resistin levels increase, antagonizing insulin action.
- Resistin contributes to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in mice.
- Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha, and coactivators CBP and p300 acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating transcription.
- PPAR gamma and RXR ligands downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
