Target Information
Apoptosis plays a major role in organism development, tissue homeostasis, and removal of damaged cells. Disruption of this process is implicated in diseases such as cancer. Members of the Bcl-2 family regulate apoptosis through conserved Bcl-2 homology (BH) domains. MAP-1, a related protein containing a BH3-like domain, induces caspase-dependent apoptosis when overexpressed. It forms homodimers and interacts with Bcl-2 family members (Bax, Bcl-2, Bcl-XL) both in vitro and in vivo. MAP-1 also associates with tumor suppressor RASSF1A following death receptor activation, leading to Bax conformational change and cellular apoptosis.
