Tight junction proteins are cell-to-cell adhesion structures in epithelial cells forming the junctional complex with adherens junctions and desmosomes.
Claudin-16, also known as Paracellin-1, is a renal tight junction protein essential for paracellular magnesium resorption. It is localized in the epithelial cells of the thick ascending limb of Henle’s loop (TAL marker) and plays a key role in Mg²⁺ transport.
Deficiency of Claudin-16 can lead to impaired renal magnesium handling and associated cardiovascular and renal dysfunctions.
