Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissue (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are known, classified into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, forms complexes with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is a useful marker for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one acidic and one basic keratin family member.
