Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified.
CKs are classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
