HSV는 Herpesviridae 계열에 속하는 바이러스로, Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)과 type 2 (HSV-2)가 인간에게 감염됩니다.
HSV-1은 주로 구순 포진(cold sores)을, HSV-2는 생식기 포진(genital herpes)을 유발합니다.
이 바이러스는 감염자가 바이러스를 배출할 때 전염되며, 이중가닥 선형 DNA 게놈을 가진 대형 바이러스입니다.
HSV는 70개 이상의 open reading frame(ORF)을 포함하며, 알츠하이머병과의 연관성도 보고되었습니다.
