Target Information
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) belongs to the Herpesviridae family. HSV-1 and HSV-2, also known as Human herpesvirus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2), are highly contagious to humans. HSV-1 strains typically cause cold sores, while HSV-2 is responsible for most genital herpes cases. Transmission occurs when an infected person sheds the virus. HSV virions contain a large double-stranded linear DNA genome enclosed within a capsid and viral envelope, carrying over 70 open reading frames (ORFs). HSV infection has also been associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
