Target Information
Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are among the most complex classes of voltage-gated ion channels, both functionally and structurally. They play key roles in regulating neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
Four sequence-related potassium channel genes—shaker, shaw, shab, and shal—have been identified in Drosophila, each with human homologs.
The KCND2 gene encodes a member of the voltage-gated, shal-related subfamily, which forms voltage-activated A-type potassium ion channels involved in the repolarization phase of the action potential. This channel mediates a rapidly inactivating A-type outward potassium current that is not controlled by the N terminus, unlike Shaker channels.
