Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). There are at least 20 different CKs identified. Most CKs are classified as either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and is typically expressed with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, keratin 14 is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one acidic and one basic keratin are expressed in all epithelial cells.
