Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions.
CA IX is a hypoxia-inducible gene product stabilized and localized within the membrane, serving as a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
Carbonic anhydrases regulate pH by controlling hydrogen ion flux, and inhibition of CA IX can increase cell death under hypoxic conditions.
