Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays key roles in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Its expression is often upregulated in carcinomas and may be linked to metastatic potential. Multiple isoforms exist due to alternative splicing, contributing to structural and functional diversity. CD44 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and it may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
