Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

AR signaling is crucial for the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also plays roles in nonreproductive tissues including muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy's disease, and male infertility.
Mutations in this gene are linked to complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
