GDF-15는 TGF-beta 사이토카인 패밀리에 속하며, 태아 발달과 다양한 조직의 성장 및 유지에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 주로 태반에서 발현되며, 임신 중 혈청 내 GDF-15 농도 상승은 배아 발달과 관련이 있습니다. 또한 GDF-15는 p53 경로 활성화에 의해 생성되는 주요 인자로서 종양 억제 기능을 가지며, 일부 암(대장암, 췌장암, 전립선암 등)의 진행과 관련된 혈청 농도 상승이 보고되었습니다.
