Target Information
NeuroD1 is a transcriptional activator that functions as a differentiation factor during neurogenesis. It binds to the insulin gene E-box, with efficient DNA binding requiring dimerization with another basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) protein. Defects in NEUROD1 are associated with maturity-onset diabetes of the young type VI (MODY6), a non–insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance, early onset, and defective insulin secretion.
