TMED9 (transmembrane emp24 protein transport domain containing 9) belongs to a family of widely present, small, type I transmembrane proteins called p24 proteins. This family can be divided into four subfamilies namely, p23 or δ, p24 or β, p25 or α, and p26 or γ. TMED9 is also called p25 and is the only member of the p25 subfamily in mammals. It localizes to endoplasmic reticulum and _cis_-Golgi network (CGN). Its C-terminal is small and faces the cytoplasm and contains degenerate sorting motifs. It has a coiled-coil domain in its extracellular domain. It also contains a KKXX ER-retrieval motif.
