Target Information
IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates.
Interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor activates signaling pathways involved in innate immune response against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms.
Homologous molecules are present in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced mainly by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFN alpha is a potent antiviral component and modulates adaptive immunity.
Dysfunction of IFN alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
