Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not traditional markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins are also present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.5. They are divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Every epithelial cell expresses at least one member of each class. Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
