Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 distinct CKs are known, classified into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
All epithelial cells express at least one member of each CK family.
