Target Information
The p16INK4a gene produces several transcript variants differing in their first exons. Two variants encode CDK4 kinase inhibitors, while another variant (ARF) encodes a protein that stabilizes tumor suppressor p53 by sequestering MDM2.
Both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF product share a common role in regulating cell cycle G1 progression.
This gene is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and functions as a key tumor suppressor gene.
