Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. These proteins form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities. They are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the mitochondrial channel (VDAC) opening, influencing membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — all key factors in apoptosis. Alternative splicing produces two isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter isoform promotes it.
