Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular functions. These proteins localize to the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), which influences mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key processes in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform functions as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform acts as an apoptotic activator.
