Target Information
BAX is a member of the Bcl-2 family and plays an important role in the regulation of apoptosis. While Bcl-2 is known as an anti-apoptotic protein, BAX has a pro-apoptotic function. Apoptosis regulation involves both homo- and heterodimerization of BAX and Bcl-2 isoforms.
The Bax gene encodes isoforms such as Bax alpha (21 kDa) and Bax beta (24 kDa). Both contain BH1, BH2, and BH3 domains, but Bax beta lacks a hydrophobic transmembrane domain.
Overexpression of BAX promotes cell death, and it can form homodimers or heterodimers with other BCL-2-related proteins.
