Target Information
Mitochondrial peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor (PBR), also known as TSPO, is an essential component of the steroidogenic machinery. It mediates cholesterol transport to the inner mitochondrial membrane upon ligand activation. PBR consists of three subunits: an isoquinoline binding site, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and an adenine nucleotide carrier. It is evolutionarily conserved from bacteria to humans and is widely expressed in peripheral tissues, while in the brain it is mainly found in glial cells. Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) inhibits Leydig cell steroidogenesis by reducing PBR mRNA stability, thereby decreasing cholesterol transport and steroid formation. PRAX-1 (peripheral benzodiazepine receptor-associated protein 1) specifically interacts with PBR.
