Target Information
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are enzymes that charge tRNAs with their cognate amino acids.
FARS2 is a phenylalanine-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) localized to the mitochondrion, consisting of a single polypeptide chain, unlike the (alpha-beta)₂ structure of the cytoplasmic forms.
Structure and catalytic analyses indicate mitochondrial PheRSs may represent a distinct class from prokaryotic and cytoplasmic eukaryotic PheRS enzymes.
Similarly, FARS1 encodes a mitochondrially located PheRS with comparable structural characteristics.
