CDK1 (Cell Division Control protein 1) is essential for the completion of START, the controlling event in the cell cycle required to initiate mitosis.
It acts as the catalytic subunit of the M-Phase Promoting Factor complex that induces mitosis and is conserved among eukaryotes.
CDK1 mediates phosphorylation of Bcl-2 during G2/M phase arrest after photodynamic therapy with hypericin, delaying apoptosis.
CDK inhibitors such as NU2058 have shown therapeutic potential in androgen-independent prostate cancer.
