Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified, generally classified as type I (acidic) or type II (basic) polypeptides.
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I low molecular weight keratin family and pairs with keratin 5. It is useful for distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
At least one member of each acidic and basic family is expressed in all epithelial cells.
