Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 different CKs are known, classified into type I (acidic) and type II (basic) subfamilies.
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is widely used in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinoma.
Expression of both acidic and basic keratins occurs in all epithelial cells.
