Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified.
They are classified into two types:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It is a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, it serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
Both acidic and basic keratins are expressed in all epithelial cells.
