Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified. Biochemically, CKs are classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically exists in combination with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas. Moreover, keratin 14 is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
