Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs have been identified and are divided into two classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Keratin 14 (KRT14) belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and typically pairs with keratin 5. It helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and serves as a marker for squamous cell carcinomas. Additionally, KRT14 is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic keratin family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
