Goat anti-tetanus exotoxin antibody recognizes tetanus toxin, also known as tentoxylysin, produced by the soil microorganism Clostridium tetani.
Target Information
Tetanus toxin is a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani. It causes tetanus, characterized by prolonged contraction of skeletal muscles. Approximately 1 million cases occur annually worldwide, resulting in 300,000–500,000 deaths, mainly in developing countries.
The toxin (~150 kDa) consists of a heavy chain (100 kDa) and a light chain (50 kDa) connected by a disulfide bond. It inhibits neurotransmitter release by binding to peripheral neuronal synapses, internalizing, and moving retrogradely along axons into the spinal cord. It blocks GABA and glycine release via synaptobrevin-2 inhibition, leading to muscle overactivity. The binding to neurons is irreversible.
