Product Specific Information
A 1:5000 dilution of PA5-77837 was sufficient for detection of alpha B crystallin in 20 µg of HeLa cell lysate by ECL immunoblot analysis. Detects approximately 22 kDa and does not cross-react with alpha A-crystallin.
Target Information
Lens proteins consist almost entirely of crystallins (about 95%). Crystallins are also found in vertebrate skeletal muscle tissue. In the lens, their structural function is to maintain the proper refractive index. The mammalian lens contains three major classes of crystallins: alpha, beta, and gamma.
Alpha-crystallin is the largest, composed of two gene products—alpha-A and alpha-B. Alpha-crystallin comprises 40% of total lens protein and functions as a chaperone to prevent aggregate formation that may lead to cataracts. Phosphorylated states of alpha-crystallin occur in response to cellular stress and may play a structural role in protein maintenance.
Alpha-B crystallin has been linked to Alexander’s disease, where it accumulates in brain cells.
