Target Information
Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and affect neuronal firing patterns. Each AHP component is kinetically distinct and mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels. The KCNN2 protein is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and contributes to the slow component of synaptic AHP, thereby regulating neuronal excitability. It is an integral membrane protein forming a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with calmodulin-binding subunits. KCNN2 belongs to the KCNN family of potassium channel genes, with two transcript variants encoding different isoforms identified.
