Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by significant biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa and have isoelectric points between pH 4.9 and 7.8. Individual cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20.
Different epithelia express distinct cytokeratin patterns that reflect both tissue type and degree of differentiation. Cytokeratin subtype expression is widely used to distinguish epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry, and are valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
