Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) belongs to the class III intermediate filament family. It is specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. Neural stem cells also strongly express GFAP.

Antibodies against GFAP are useful markers for identifying astrocytic cells. GFAP expression is observed in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells, as well as in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells of the liver, some salivary tumor cells, and occasionally in erythrocytes. It serves as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development.

Mutations in the GFAP gene cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocyte-related disorder of the central nervous system. Alternative splicing of the GFAP gene produces multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
