Target Information
The alpha/beta hydrolase superfamily includes diverse enzymes involved in key biochemical processes and associated with various diseases. Despite having unrelated sequences and substrates, they share a canonical alpha/beta hydrolase fold composed of an eight-stranded parallel alpha/beta structure and a catalytic triad of histidine, acid, and nucleophile residues.
These enzymes are often drug targets for diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and blood clotting disorders.
The abhydrolase domain-containing protein 9 (ABHD9), also known as epoxide hydrolase 3 (EPHX3), is a 360-amino-acid protein belonging to this superfamily. The ABHD9 gene is located on chromosome 19, which contains over 63 million bases and approximately 1,400 genes, making it one of the most gene-dense human chromosomes.
