Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the highly conserved cyclin C subfamily. The encoded protein tightly associates with cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) and forms a major subunit of positive transcription elongation factor b (p-TEFb). In humans, multiple forms of p-TEFb exist, each potentially containing different cyclins and CDK9.

The Cyclin T1–CDK9 complex acts as a cofactor of the HIV-1 Tat protein and is essential for full activation of viral transcription. This complex also facilitates transcript elongation via phosphorylation of the carboxy-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II. Overexpression of this gene is implicated in tumor growth. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
