Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the highly conserved cyclin C subfamily. The encoded protein tightly associates with cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) and forms a major subunit of the positive transcription elongation factor b (p-TEFb). In humans, multiple forms of p-TEFb exist, each containing one of several cyclins paired with CDK9.
The Cyclin T1–CDK9 complex acts as a cofactor for the HIV-1 Tat protein, essential for full activation of viral transcription. This complex also promotes transcript elongation through phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain. Overexpression of Cyclin T1 has been linked to tumor growth.
