Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a catalytic subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK consists of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It is a key energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Upon metabolic stress, AMPK activates and phosphorylates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), regulating fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. In mice, this subunit is linked to insulin sensitivity and myocardial energy homeostasis during ischemia.
