Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, playing a key role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is mainly expressed on cytotoxic T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor for MHC class I molecules.
It is also found on subsets of NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Upon MHC-I/peptide binding, CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor cell clearance.
Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is promoted by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
