SMAD3는 SMAD 단백질 계열에 속하며, Drosophila의 mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) 및 C. elegans의 Sma 유전자 산물과 유사합니다. SMAD 단백질은 다양한 신호 경로를 매개하는 신호 전달자이자 전사 조절 인자로 작용합니다. SMAD3는 transforming growth factor-beta에 의해 활성화되는 전사 조절자로, 암 발생 조절에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
