Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active in specific tissues during early embryonic development. These genes contain a paired box domain responsible for DNA binding and play roles in regulating genetic programs during organogenesis.
PAX2 is expressed in the developing kidney, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures derived from mesenchyme. Its expression decreases as renal epithelial cells mature. Persistent expression of PAX2 has been observed in Wilms tumors, correlating with undifferentiated epithelial cell proliferation. The Wilms tumor suppressor protein WT1 is known to repress PAX2 transcription, indicating a regulatory relationship between these two genes.
