Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active in specific tissues during early embryonic development. These genes contain a paired box domain that enables DNA binding and gene regulation. Mutations in PAX genes are linked to developmental disorders such as Waardenburg syndrome (PAX3), Aniridia (PAX6), and Wilms tumor (PAX2).
During embryogenesis, PAX2 is expressed in the developing kidney, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures. PAX2 expression decreases as the renal epithelium matures but persists in undifferentiated epithelial cells of Wilms tumors. The Wilms tumor suppressor protein WT1 is known to downregulate PAX2 transcription, suggesting a regulatory relationship between WT1 and PAX2.
