Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active in specific tissues during early embryonic development. Members contain a paired box DNA-binding domain and regulate genetic programs essential for organogenesis.
PAX2 is expressed in developing kidney tissues, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures. Expression decreases as the renal epithelium matures but persists in Wilms' tumors, correlating with proliferative undifferentiated epithelial cells. WT1 protein expression is associated with down-regulation of PAX2, suggesting WT1 may repress PAX2 transcription.
