Target Information
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a growth and differentiation factor involved in neurogenesis, osteogenesis, and hematopoiesis. Produced by activated T cells, monocytes, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, OSM can exert both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. It stimulates fibroblast, smooth muscle, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cell proliferation, while inhibiting growth of certain normal and tumor cell lines. OSM also promotes cytokine release (IL-6, GM-CSF, G-CSF) from endothelial cells and enhances LDL receptor expression in hepatoma cells. It shares structural and functional similarities with LIF, IL-6, and CNTF.
