Target Information
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations of the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of CF cases share the deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), leading to abnormal chloride transport.
This mutation is associated with severe lung and liver disease. Interestingly, heterozygous and homozygous ΔF508 mice showed reduced uptake of Salmonella typhi in intestinal submucosa, suggesting a potential evolutionary advantage.
