Members of the TNF superfamily regulate immune responses and induce apoptosis.
A novel member of this family, APRIL (A Proliferation-Inducing Ligand), also known as TALL2 or TRDL1a in human and mouse, has been identified.
Two receptors for APRIL, TACI and BCMA, mediate its biological activity.
APRIL stimulates B and T cell proliferation, triggers humoral immune responses, activates NF-κB, and induces cell death.
APRIL and its close relative BlyS, along with their receptors BCMA and TACI, are implicated in autoimmune diseases and cancer.
